What Is the Difference Between Selling and Consigning Inherited Firearms?
When a family decides to part with an inherited firearm collection, there are generally two paths: selling the collection outright to a dealer, or placing it on consignment. Understanding the difference helps families make the decision that is right for their specific situation.
Outright sale means the dealer purchases the collection from the estate directly. The family receives payment — typically a lump sum — and the transaction is complete. This is the faster option and works well when the estate needs to be settled quickly, when the family does not want an ongoing relationship with a dealer, or when simplicity matters more than maximizing every dollar.
Consignment means the dealer sells items on the estate's behalf over time. The dealer handles the sales, legal transfers, and documentation. The estate receives payment as items sell, minus a commission. This approach typically results in higher overall value than an outright sale, particularly for collections that include collectible, rare, or high-value pieces that would attract serious buyers willing to pay full market value.
The right choice depends on a few factors: how quickly the estate needs to be settled, the overall value of the collection, and whether there are individual pieces that merit special attention versus a large number of everyday firearms.
A trustworthy dealer will explain both options honestly and help you think through which makes more sense — rather than steering you toward whichever benefits the dealer most.
Firearms Estate Services offers both outright purchase and consignment arrangements. We will walk through both options with you and give you a clear picture of what each would look like for your specific collection.
