Is It Legal to Sell Firearms I Inherited From a Family Member?

Yes, in most cases you can legally sell firearms you have inherited. However, the way the sale is conducted matters significantly, and doing it wrong — even with good intentions — can create legal problems.

The safest and most straightforward path is to sell to a licensed firearms dealer, known as an FFL (Federal Firearms Licensee). A licensed dealer handles the required documentation, ensures the transfer complies with federal law, and takes the legal and paperwork burden off your family.

What you should avoid is selling privately through online classifieds, social media, or word of mouth without proper documentation. Depending on your state, this type of transfer may be illegal, and it leaves the estate without a clear record that the transfer was handled properly.

If the collection is large or includes valuable pieces, outright sale to a dealer may not be the only option worth considering. Consignment arrangements allow a licensed dealer to sell items on your behalf, often resulting in higher overall value than a quick bulk purchase offer.

One other thing to be aware of: certain types of firearms — including suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and fully automatic weapons — are regulated under the National Firearms Act and require additional steps before any transfer or sale can take place. A licensed dealer will be able to identify these items and walk you through the correct process.

Firearms Estate Services purchases collections outright and also offers consignment arrangements for families who want to maximize the value of what they have inherited. All transactions are fully documented and legally compliant.
