How Do I Handle Inherited Ammunition and Reloading Equipment?

Families settling a firearms estate often focus entirely on the guns and overlook what can be a significant quantity of ammunition, reloading components, and related equipment. These items deserve the same careful attention — both for safety reasons and because they can carry real value.

Ammunition is legal to possess and transfer in most situations, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Large quantities of ammunition stored improperly — particularly in a home that will be vacated or sold — create a safety concern that should be addressed as part of the estate process. Ammunition should be stored in a cool, dry location away from heat sources and should not be left unsecured in an unoccupied property.

Reloading equipment — presses, dies, powder measures, case tumblers, and related components — is not regulated the way firearms are, but it does have meaningful market value that families frequently underestimate. A complete reloading setup from a known manufacturer can be worth several hundred dollars or more, and specialty components or large quantities of reloading powder and primers add to that figure.

One important note regarding reloading powder and primers: these are classified as hazardous materials and cannot be shipped through standard mail or common carriers. Disposal or transfer of large quantities should be handled carefully and in accordance with local regulations.

As with firearms, the best approach is to inventory everything before making any decisions. A complete picture of what the estate includes allows for a much more informed conversation about value and options.
